The Pony Express - The Original Courier Jobs
When you take on any kind of courier jobs, you are taking on the responsibility of a weighty American legacy. The country was built on the backs of brave pioneers, and where there were new frontiers to be explored, there were always people needed to carry messages to and from the homes of those out exploring the wilderness and forging a new life. Although modern-day delivery workers may not always be heading off into quite such rugged terrain from the safety of their cabs, when you're rolling along the highways kicking up clouds of dust behind you, it's hard not to feel some connection to the couriers of a time long-past!
The Original Couriers
Perhaps the most famous example of a company that devoted itself to the most challenging and strenuous courier jobs of its time was the Pony Express. A fast mail service that crossed the rocky mountains, great plains, and the high sierra from Missouri to California, it was the most direct means of communication between eastern and western America before the invention of the telegraph. Messages were carried between the two final destinations in just ten days, and what makes it even more incredible is that it was entirely done on horseback! Messages would be carried by riders in staged relays, to avoid both horses and riders succumbing to exhaustion. Thankfully, it's a problem that modern messengers don't need to worry about to quite the same extent on their own courier jobs!
Why the Rush?
There was a definite need for skilled delivery workers back in 1860, when the Pony Express was first created. After gold was discovered in California in 1848, thousands of prospectors, investors, and businessmen made their way there to take advantage of the opportunities to be found - and they needed a means of quick and reliable communication to various organisations on the other side of the country. The demand for faster mail led to the formation of the Pony Express, with 120 riders, 400 horses, over 180 stations, and many more personnel to see that the courier jobs of the day could be completed. Although many people discounted a ten-day delivery service as impossible, it was nevertheless achieved. Interestingly, one of the founders, Alexander Major, claimed the business would succeed 'by the help of God', and so had every employee swear on a bible not to swear, gamble, treat animals cruelly, or act in any way unbecoming of a gentleman.

Messages would be carried by riders in staged relays, to avoid both horses and riders succumbing to exhaustion. Thankfully, it's a problem that modern messengers don't need to worry about to quite the same extent on their own courier jobs!
Why the Rush?
There was a definite need for skilled delivery workers back in 1860, when the Pony Express was first created. After gold was discovered in California in 1848, thousands of prospectors, investors, and businessmen made their way there to take advantage of the opportunities to be found - and they needed a means of quick and reliable communication to various organisations on the other side of the country. The demand for faster mail led to the formation of the Pony Express, with 120 riders, 400 horses, over 180 stations, and many more personnel to see that the courier jobs of the day could be completed. Although many people discounted a ten-day delivery service as impossible, it was nevertheless achieved. Interestingly, one of the founders, Alexander Major, claimed the business would succeed 'by the help of God', and so had every employee swear on a bible not to swear, gamble, treat animals cruelly, or act in any way unbecoming of a gentleman.
